After months of preparation, I launched my business as a Technology Leadership Coach last week. The response has been amazing! Lots of congratulations, lots of inquiries, a few lunch dates, etc. I’m really grateful to everyone who has reached out, and excited to keep moving forward!

As I’ve heard over and over on my favorite podcast (NPR’s “How I Built This”), starting a solo venture can be a wild ride. And it’s certainly true in my case! Here are some things I’ve learned so far:

THE DOPAMINE RUSH

This is no joke. My business coach has advised me to not get hung up on views, likes, and comments. But… I can’t help it. 😜 I get a little thrill when my profile views are up, or when someone I don’t know registers for my eBook, or when my articles get shared and reposted. But then I see people with a million likes on their posts and it takes me down a notch. It’ll take a long time to get there!

I guess that’s a good reason to have…

PATIENCE

I truly believe I can help people, and I believe I’m doing this thing the right way. Getting my message to the right people is just a matter of time, consistency, and patience. If I didn’t love the idea of what I’m doing, I’d probably get complacent and just fizzle out – but that’s not going to happen!

HOW TO SPELL “ENTREPRENEURIAL”

Seriously. Who decided on the spelling here? I think it’s a test – if you’re dedicated enough to learn how to spell this, you’re dedicated enough to start a company.

BALANCE

This is a side venture; I still work at Magenic and love it there. Full-time job, new company, a freelance trumpet career, and two very active kids… It’s a lot to handle, but it’s a good problem to have. And I’m especially grateful for my family’s support. In fact, my 9-year-old daughter just started her own business with a friend, and told me it’s because she was excited about what I’m doing. That’s pretty awesome!

NETWORKING, FRIENDS, AND MENTORS

I’ve been able to meet some new friends and mentors, and reconnect with old ones. Not only is it good for business, it’s just good for my soul. I should have started making these efforts a long time ago!

For my friends who have started their own companies – does any of this sound familiar? 😁
